| wow, it's been a long time. apparently xanga "misses" me, so here's this post to get rid of some spam..
some updates:
I proposed to my gf of almost three years last christmas and she said yes. so far, we're shooting for a fall 2009 wedding. full story in a note on my facebook
I'll be working in Newark at Continental Airlines' Chief Pilot's Office for the entire summer. it's unpaid, but benefits include actual time in their B737-300 simulators in Houston, high-altitude training in a pressure chamber, unlimited passes on the Continental route structure, and awesome exposure to the day-to-day operations at a major airline hub. wooooooo woooo! also there's a good chance i'll be hired as a pilot at Continental with significantly less flight hours required..
until next year...

| so since the end of June I've been down in Daytona training for my Commercial Pilot certificate Monday was my cross-country solo. this was different from the cross-country solos I flew for my Private Pilot in that this latest flight was more than 4 times as far.. all solo!
but, halfway down on the return trip to Daytona, there was a little problem..
pictures from my flight are here: http://picasaweb.google.com/tlernerlam/MySoloXCCrossCountry
I woke up on Monday morning at around 5 for my departure at 8. I got to the flight planning area, planned for about an hour, performed my walk-around, and finally tookoff at 7:50. my destination was Florence Regional Arpt (FLO) in South Carolina, about 375 miles and about 3 hours away. I landed on time, took a break, checked the weather, and left for Savannah (SAV), GA, my second stop on my XC and on the way back to Daytona.
I parked at Signature Flight Support (a great FBO btw), checked the weather, and to my dismay, thunderstorms were popping up over Jacksonville, which was directly over my route of flight. Worst yet, the thunderstorms created a line that stretched across the entire peninsula of FL, and I couldn't fly over the water.
Deciding I'd wait out the storms, I hunkered down at Signature and watched other pilots land and takeoff. The latest I could depart Savannah to arrive in Daytona by nightfall was 7PM.
7PM came and went, and the storms were still brewing over the northern part of FL, only getting more powerful...
So, I made the hard decision of staying in Savannah for the night. I'd have to find a hotel and pay out-of-pocket for the expenses of the room and food. Fortunately, the ladies at Signature were nice enough to find me a hotel room after making numerous calls, something, given my stress level, I wouldn't have been able to do myself. A car came to pick me up and I spent the night in Savannah.. nice room
After a good night's rest I woke up in the morning ready to fly to China. Skies were clear as I left SAV, and after a two hour uneventful flight, I finally landed safely in Daytona, a full 26 hours after I left DAB.
After 7.1 hours of flight time and 750 miles (roughly the distance from New York to Chicago) I was safely home *cue applause*
This was my longest and farthest flight to date. Strangely, I felt like a real airline pilot more than ever during my stay in Savannah. I mean, here I was, flying to an unknown city, staying overnight in a hotel, and leaving the next morning. I even had the shuttle drive me to and from the airport and everything. Damn cool.
